It’s Those That Most Don’t Expect Much From, That Go Onto Achieve What Most Can Only Dream Of.

I recently reconnected with a good friend from my youth.

A high school buddy whom I’ve haven’t spoken with in over 25 years reached out over social media and we spent a couple of hours on the phone reminiscing about the “good old times”.

I laughed so much my sides hurt.

We talked about everything from back then, from the awkwardness around girls to summer afternoons shooting hoops in his parent’s driveway.

But there was one subject we both kept coming back to….how far we’d both come. In other words, we each expressed sincere gratitude for all the success with both have achieved and how good our lives turned out.

The phrase “two small town boys done good” kept springing to mind.

And by that, I’m referring to my humble beginnings.

I grew up in rural Louisiana.

To say we were poor would be an understatement.

Neither of my parents finished high school, type of poor.

No central heat or air conditioning in the house, type of poor.

Three kids stuffed into one bedroom, type of poor.

If there had been a “Most Likely Not To Amount To Much” award in high school, I probably would have looked like a good candidate, on the surface.

The reason I emphasize on the surface, is because by all outwardly accounts I wasn’t starting from a great place in order to build wealth.

But as Emerson so aptly taught us, “What lies behind us are but tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

And boy didn’t something lie within me.

That something was a chip on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong.

That, coupled with a strong work ethic and fierce independent streak, shot me out of those small town beginnings like a bullet shot from a rifle.

There was no stopping me.

Indeed, some of the best success fuel in the world is having an underdog mentality. Life is even more fun when you’re doing something that others suggested you can’t do!

Malcom Gladwell said this of underdogs – “The fact of being an underdog changes people in ways that we often fail to appreciate. It opens doors and creates opportunities and enlightens and permits things that might otherwise have seemed unthinkable.”

So true…

And if you’re reading this and you’re of the opinion that wealth is unthinkable, I want you to know something – you have everything you need to succeed financially.

Don’t worry if you didn’t have a fancy house growing up, make personal effort your fuel to overcome the odds.

Don’t worry if others had it better than you, just flat outwork them.

Don’t worry if they say you’ll never make it, let your results astonish them.

For you see, it’s usually those that most people don’t expect much from, that go on to achieve the things that most people can only dream of.

The world is not full of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Quite the contrary.

It’s jam packed with ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Ordinary people like Sylvester Stallone who grew up with a speech impediment due to an accident at birth and then went onto massive success.

Ordinary people like Oprah Winfrey who grew up in such stark poverty that she wore dresses made of potato sacks and then went onto massive success.

So, if you’re ordinary, that’s great!

Don’t spend another second thinking about where you started.

It doesn’t matter.

The direction where you’re headed is all that matters.

Start today, right where you are.

Work hard. Work smart. Work hard and smart.

Earn as much as you can. Put some aside. Invest that sum wisely.

Repeat that a few times. Repeat it a few more times.

And soon, they’ll all say something about you…

“Wow, that ordinary person did something extraordinary!”

Be free. Nothing else is worth it.
